Chetan’s statement sparked outrage across the state.

Chetan earlier tweeted that Pambada/Nalike/Parawa traditions predate Vedic-Brahmanic Hinduism

As Kannada’s film Kantara continues to hit the box office hard with all of its dubbed versions, the controversy surrounding actor Chetan Kumar’s recent remark about the film doesn’t seem to be abating. Chetan Kumar’s statement that the Bhootha Kola ritual and the deities depicted in the film are not part of Hindu culture had already caused backlash from many sectors, now the professional dancers who perform the ritual have decided to protest in their own way. They decided to worship the deity known as Panjurli, shown in the film, as a way of protesting Chetan’s statement.

Chetan previously tweeted that Pambada/Nalike/Parawa traditions predate Vedic-Brahmanic Hinduism and denied director and actor Rishabh Shetty’s claim that everything shown in the film is part of Hinduism. He even asked not to include the adivasi cult in Hinduism.

Chetan’s statement sparked outrage across the state. Rishabh’s father, Bhaskar Shetty, devotees of the traditional coastal Karnataka deity and divine dancers protested the statement. The Hindu Vigilance Forum also filed a complaint against Chetan at Karkala Police Station.

Coastal residents of the state who perform the divine dance of Bhootha Kola said that in protest against the actor’s statement, they would worship Panjurli, a spirit revered in the region. According to locals, the spirit takes the form of a male boar. Panjurli had been featured extensively in Kantara and was an integral part of the plot.

Leeladhar Kumar Bangera from Udupi has been involved in this form of worship for years and said that their worship has been going for years and they have been maintaining it for generations. He said people have been living on the coast for years and they cannot be nicknamed Adivasis. Moreover, he said that these are not actors who portrayed the Bhootha Kola in the film as part of the acting. He said that they sincerely performed it for years and the best way to respond to Chetan’s statement was to sincerely worship the deity Panjurli as part of a protest.
